Last Tuesday 10th August local MP Mark Hunter visited the AVRO Heritage Centre and met local members of the group at the BAE site in Woodford. Following the visit, Mr Hunter reiterated his strong support for the heritage centre to remain on the site regardless of what other developments take place in the area in the future.

The Heritage Centre is one of the most significant of its kind in the country, with aviation artefacts dating back over the last century. Amongst the hundreds of items on display are historic aeroplane parts, models, photographs, documents and uniforms and other assorted memorabilia. The collection traces the history of aviation on the Woodford site starting with the original A.V.Roe company, then recording the construction of Lancaster Bombers during the Second World War, Vulcan Bombers during the Cold War, and, more recently, Nimrod Reconnacence Aircraft.

The AVRO Heritage Centre in Woodford is open for visits by prior arrangement on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 4pm (48 hours notice required). To arrange a visit to the AVRO Heritage Centre you can contact telephone 0161 955 4182 on these days.

Speaking after the visit, Mark said:

"With the BAE Woodford site scheduled for closure in 2012, it's more important than ever that we remember the heritage and history of the site here at Woodford.

"Such an important contribution to British aviation has been made on this site over the last century, not least in the building of planes like the Lancaster Bomber which were vital to the Allied victory in the Second World War.

"I am pressing for a permanent heritage centre to remain here to ensure this important part of our history isn't lost for future generations."
