Last Wednesday 28th July 2010, the Gatley Carrs Conservation Group were pleased to welcome Mayor Hazel Lees, Mark Hunter MP and local councillors Pam King and Iain Roberts to the awarding of the nature reserve's first Green Pennant, for 2010/11.

From being a dumping ground for builders' rubble in the 1930s, Gatley Carrs has blossomed into a nature reserve with wildflower meadow, ponds and a wide range of flora and fauna.

Mr Hunter paid tribute to the hard work of everyone involved in bringing about this transformation and the Chairman of the Conservation Group also thanked Stockport Council for their important role.

The Group are now looking for funding to improve the ponds in the nature reserve and attract even more wildlife to the area.

Commenting, Mark said:

"Gatley Carrs has undergone an astonishing and dramatic transformation over the years.

"I congratulate the Nature Reserve Group for their fantastic success in creating an enjoyable and tranquil environment from what was once an eyesore.

"This is a magnificent achievement for the Group and I am delighted that they have been awarded a Green Pennant.

"I am sure this impressive group will go from strength to strength."
