Mark is pressing for more carriages for local trains

Yesterday, 26th July 2010, Cheadle MP Mark Hunter led a delegation of local MPs and members and senior officials from the G.M.P.T.E meet with Transport Minister Theresa Villiers to press for extra carriages on train services in the Greater Manchester area.

Mr Hunter had requested an urgent meeting with the Minister about the need for the carriages following complaints from many members of the public about overcrowding - particularly at peak journey times. The cross-party delegation was united in their desire to press the case for action to tackle the problem and the Minister acknowledged the strength of the argument I her response.

The delegation highlighted the need to tackle overcrowded trains from several perspectives, but particularly from the point of view of passengers and the impact on the regional economy.

Commenting, Mark said:

"I was delighted to lead the cross-party delegation to this key meeting with the Minister. All the three main political parties are working with the GMPTE to try and find a way forward on this pressing issue and Government has a key role to play in bringing about improvements.

"It was important to put our case directly to the Minister, and she can be in no doubt we will continue to press our case strongly.

"It's simply unacceptable that so many local people have to tolerate over-crowded conditions when travelling by train."
