HUNTER HAILS FAIRER VOTES ANNOUNCEMENT

Local MP Mark Hunter has welcomed the Coalition Government announcement that a referendum will take place on May 5th 2011 - the same day as the local elections - on reforming the electoral system.
Mr Hunter has pledged to back the proposal for fairer votes and will be actively campaigning for a 'Yes' vote. The move to a more proportional system, he argued, will give voters greater power and ensure fewer votes are 'wasted'.
The official announcement included a package of other constitutional reforms such as removing the Prime Minister's power to decide the date of a General Election; reducing the number of MPs in the House of Commons and introducing the right to sack your MP if he or she is guilty of serious wrongdoing.
Commenting, Mark said:
"The set of radical reforms announced by Nick Clegg are a huge achievement for the Liberal Democrats, and an even bigger one for the country. Labour had 13 years to put electoral reform onto the agenda - we managed it in 2 months.
"No doubt there is a fierce campaign ahead of us for the Alternative Vote System to be introduced, but residents have my guarantee that I will be backing a change to the outdated and unfair first past the post system that we are currently stuck with.
"Britain is behind the times in persisting with a voting system no longer fit for purpose. Frankly, in this day and age people deserve a better than discredited voting system where some votes count much more than others.
"AV would be a massive step forward, and a huge move to reform our democracy and help bring about an end to our broken politics."
