Last week local MP Mark Hunter joined with Cheadle Hulme High School pupils and representatives of local charity Beacon Counselling to officially hand over a cheque of £3000 from the Youth & Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) as the prize for winning a top regional award from the organisation.

Three weeks ago, as part of a national competition lead by YPI pupils from Cheadle Hulme High School gave a series of presentations on behalf of local charities including Beacon Counselling, Seashell Trust and St Ann's Hospice. The YPI aims to give secondary students a hands-on experience of philanthropy that provides them with the skills and awareness to make a positive difference to the community.

After discussing the number of impressive presentations given by the pupils, Mr Hunter and a panel of judges agreed that the best presentation was delivered by the group of pupils speaking on behalf of Beacon. The winning group were then able to donate £3000 to the local charity.

Commenting, Mark said:

"This was a memorable occasion both for the local charities involved and for the pupils at Cheadle Hulme High School.

"The competition was very tough and the panely of judges had a hard task to choose between the competing teams. However our final decision - for Beacon - was unanimous!

"The YPI have organised a fantastic competition which encourages young people to have greater confidence in their communication and presentation skills, as well as to get more involved with community activities.

It is also great news that Beacon Counselling received a prize of £3000 which will, I am sure, go a long way in helping this outstanding local organisation."
