Today (Wednesday 7 April) local MP and Lib Dem Shadow Transport Minister Mark Hunter led for the Lib Dems in a parliamentary debate on Transport in the North West. Mr Hunter called for greater improvement for local transport services, including:

  • backing the fully costed Lib Dem plan to re-open thousands of miles of track and reopen stations for example in Cheadle;
  • supporting the fully costed Lib Dem policy of making fares cheaper immediately to attract more rail users;
  • ensuring that Stockport is not left out of High Speed Rail plans, stressing the positive impact High Speed Rail could have in our area.

Since becoming the MP for this area Mark has been constantly active on local transport issues. He set up the local Cheadle and District Rail User Group to lobby for improvements to local rail services, and through consistent campaigning has managed to achieve vital upgrades to local stations - including an upgrade and disabled access at Gatley Station and the major refurbishment of Cheadle Hulme Station set to go ahead early next year.

Commenting after the event, Mark said:

"I was pleased to take advantage of the debate in Parliament today to speak out about the needs and interests of our own area.

"Over the coming weeks I will be fighting to continue this record of action on local transport services.

"As a regular rail user myself, I know that we need massive investment into both our local and national rail services, not least due to the positive impact this could have on our community, our environment and our economy.

"That said, there will always be a need for good roads and other services - which is why I welcome Stockport Council's extra £2 million investment into road repairs after the winter weather."

    If you are a resident of the Cheadle constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

    If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
