CHEQUE CAMPAIGN GATHERS FORCE AS TREASURY COMMITTEE HOLD INQUIRY

Lib Dem Shadow Chancellor Vince Cable MP is backing Mark's campaign
Today, Tuesday 16th March the Treasury Select Committee held an official inquiry into the decision to abolish cheques in Britain. Local MP Mark Hunter, who is leading the campaign against the decision, has hailed the inquiry as a 'huge step forward'.
In November 2009 Mark tabled a special parliamentary motion opposing the move by the top high street banks to phase cheques out of use in Britain, which has now been backed by 124 MPs from all parties. The campaign also received the backing of Which? And Federation of Small Businesses as well as the backing of many small businesses and charities up and down the country.
Mark has recently met with the Payments Council, the body of top high street banks who plan to end use of the cheque in Britain, to express concern that thousands of the most vulnerable people in the country - particularly elderly, housebound, and disabled people - as well as thousands of small businesses, will be hit hardest by the decision.
The official House of Commons Treasury Select Committee has now announced they will hold an inquiry into the decision, and hear evidence from a number of affected organisations. A transcript of the meeting will be available on the parliamentary website afterwards.
Commenting, Mark said:
"I am delighted that the campaign is moving forward and that an official enquiry has now been announced.
"The fact is that this decision hurts those who need help most - and the banks are yet again putting themselves before their customers.
"Since December I have met with several organisations over this decision and the fact that this inquiry has been announced is a further sign of the strength of this campaign."
