Local booze-related hospital cases up 42% in five years

Commenting on the number of people admitted to North West hospitals for alcohol related illness rising by more than 40% in the last five years, Cheadle MP Mark Hunter has condemned the revelations as 'an extremely worrying trend'.
The statistics sited also show that in '08-'09 an average 2,081 people per 100,000 of the North West population received treatment last year for an injury, disease or ailment caused directly or indirectly by drink - the second highest of any region in Britain. Mr Hunter commented on the shock figures after they were released in an official parliamentary answer by Health Minister Gillian Merron.
Last Thursday (7 January 2010) a Parliamentary report highlighted weak Government policy on alcohol misuse and recommended a change of strategy in battling binge drinking in Britain.
Commenting, Mark Hunter MP said:
"Booze Britain is out of control. The Government have spent the last thirteen years dilly-dallying over action on alcohol misuse and the consequences of their do-nothing approach are now tragically clear.
"Our already stretched emergency services are facing more and more pressure from binge drinkers meaning that there is less time and money available for tackling crime and providing sound healthcare.
"Britain's drinking culture needs to be drastically changed to end the huge rise in serious alcohol-related problems - it is clear that the Government's inaction is making things much worse.
"Action is needed now to prevent alcohol being sold in our supermarkets at pocket-money prices."
