Yesterday (17 December 2009) Lib Dem Leader Nick Clegg joined local Cheadle MP Mark Hunter at Stepping Hill Hospital to view the impressive new neo-natal unit and childrens services and to discuss the importance of these strong services to society.

Mark and Nick Clegg toured the new neo-natal unit which opened earlier this month and cost around £3.5million. The new unit provides state of the art facilities for young and premature babies from the wider Stockport area.

Nick Clegg highlighted the importance of family centred maternity services that explicitly set out to involve the immediate family, particularly fathers, right from the start and he spoke of the new neo-natal facility as an example of best practice that is the envy of the rest of the country.

Stepping Hill recently won an award from the Parliamentary Group for Maternity for their work in the 'inclusive services for disadvantaged groups and communities'.

Commenting after the visit, Mark said:

"As a father of two and a husband myself, I know first-hand just how important it is for both the mum and dad to be actively involved with children from birth. It is great to see that one of our local hospitals is promoting this through exciting new facilities.

"Nick Clegg's visit was a great opportunity to show how our local health services are working in practice, and how they are going from strength to strength. Quality health services always have been - and always will be - at the forefront of the Liberal Democrat's plans.

"I am very proud of what Stepping Hill has achieved. Myself and my family have had good cause to be extremely thankful for the care and expertise of Stepping Hill hospital and its staff over many years.

"'I'm regularly in touch with local health officials to ensure that we are getting the best deal possible, and I will continue to press the case for improved services both locally and in Parliament."

If you are a resident of the Cheadle constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
