Mark has lead the fight in Parliament to retain jobs in BAe Woodford

Today (Tuesday 15th December) Cheadle MP Mark Hunter will lead a cross party group of MPs including Hazel Grove MP Andrew Stunell, Tony Lloyd MP, Sir Nicholas Winterton MP and top bosses from BAE to meet with Defence Minister Quentin Davies to press the case for additional work for the site which could prolong the site's future and delay the scheduled closure in 2012 for the BAe Systems site in Woodford.

This Autumn Mr Hunter challenged Gordon Brown in the House of Commons over the Government's decision to buy American aircraft instead of placing orders with Woodford. Brown responded by saying that a decision had not yet been made yet despite an indication to the contrary from Quentin Davies, creating more uncertainty about the future of the site in Woodford.

Mark has lead the campaign to secure the jobs for a further eighteen months and instigated a special Commons debate on the issue after meeting with the Minister earlier this year to discuss the matter.

Commenting, Mark Hunter MP said:

"This could well be the last throw of the dice as we attempt to secure further work for Woodford. There are still 1100 jobs at stake and even though this work would only preserve those jobs for a further eighteen months, I think that 's a battle worth fighting.

"With Gordon Brown's promise of British jobs for British workers I do hope he is going to stand by his early commitment and not let down the workers at Woodford.

"As the local MP it is my job to stand up for jobs in my constituency, and I am always proud to do so. Whilst others may already be planning a memorial for this historic site, I will continue to fight for jobs and the well being of the dedicated workforce employed there.

"Although it is right to be considering the future, my priority is to ensure that the loyal workforce are properly looked after."
