Leading consumer group Which? has today given its officially backing to the "save the cheque" campaign, launched last week by Cheadle MP Mark Hunter.

The campaign is designed to put pressure on bankers to think again before abolishing the cheque in a vote on 16th December. If the decision is made to abolish the cheque, many of the nation's most vulnerable people will face great inconvenience. The cheque has been around for over 2,000 years, but bankers plan to abolish it to save money.

Commenting, a spokesperson from Which? said:

"Which? opposes setting an end-date for phasing out cheques until there are cheap and safe alternatives in place for people who rely on them.

"Prematurely getting rid off cheques will make life very difficult for many of the most vulnerable, including the elderly, the house-bound and those who don't have access to the internet.

"That's why we're giving our backing to cross-party efforts to save the cheque."

If you are a resident of the Cheadle constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
