Lib Dems lead the way on 10:10 climate change campaign

Mark and the Liberal Democrats have a strong record of action against climate change
This Wednesday (21st October) Cheadle MP Mark Hunter joined Lib Dem colleagues in voting in favour of a Parliamentary motion that would have seen the Government commit to the successful 10:10 national environment campaign, backed by organisations such as the Environment Agency and Natural England. The campaign, launched this summer, seeks to cut carbon emissions by 10% in 2010. Sadly the Government voted against the plan and ensured the motion fell by a slim margin of just 25 votes - despite the backing of Conservative MPs and several Labour rebels.
Thousands of people from all over the country have written to MPs, asking them to sign up to the 10:10 campaign. Mr Hunter himself has had many constituents in touch him and signed up to the campaign in its early stages. He then helped to ensure that a Parliamentary vote took place on the issue - the debate and vote were both held as part of a special Liberal Democrat Opposition Day in Parliament.
Recently Stockport Council became the latest local authority to sign up to the 10:10 campaign, alongside many of the country's other leading green councils. The Labour Government's decision to reject the opportunity to back a commitment to 10:10 has been widely criticised by environmental groups.
Commenting after the vote, Mark said:
"This is a sad day for Labour, for Parliament, and for our planet. How is the whole world going to tackle global warming if our Government can't?
"The threat of climate change is real and vast and if we do not act quickly the result will be catastrophic.
"I am proud to be an MP for a Party that possess a clear commitment to fighting the climate crisis and am delighted that Stockport Council have signed up to this important campaign.
"The reaction of people in the Cheadle constituency to this campaign has been uplifting - there is a great demand for real change to face up to the environmental threat."
