A serious, sustainable solution for the Woodford BAe site must be sort through public consultation

A packed public meeting, organised by Stockport Council and supported by local MP Mark Hunter, heard from many local residents with ideas about the future development of the BAe site, scheduled to close in 2012.

The meeting was the first of a series of public consultations that allow local people a chance to voice their concerns and interests over the future of the historic BAe site in Woodford, which is set to close after the current Nimrod project is completed.

Mr Hunter commended the Council for setting up this meeting and giving the local community an early opportunity to contribute to decisions that will need to be made over the site's future.

The Cheadle MP, whose constituency covers Woodford village, paid tribute to the thousands of people who have worked at the site over many years and updated residents on the question he had asked the Prime Minister in Parliament the previous day regarding extra orders for Nimrod aircraft. The PM's answer appeared to contradict an earlier letter from Defence Minister Quentin Davies to BAe Systems.

Commenting after the meeting, Mark said:

"It was encouraging to see so many people come along and voice their thoughts over the future of the site.

"This strong community spirit has helped shape Woodford into the unique area it is today. Hearing ideas and concerns about the next move for the BAe site is absolutely critical to its future progress.

"The discussions were very useful - it is clear that whatever decisions are taken, any scheme must be viable, practical and must have the necessary financial backing.

"I will continue to consult and update local people on progress as the process moves forward. We must have a sustainable solution which is relevant to the unique characteristics of the village. This is the real way forward for Woodford."
