Local MP celebrate Girl Guiding centenary

Mark celebrated the centenary with the Cheadle Abney Division of the Girl Guides
This Saturday (5th September), Cheadle MP Mark Hunter, helped the Cheadle Abney Division of the Girl Guides to celebrate their centenary.
Mr Hunter joined the Guides, Brownies and Rainbows at Bruntwood Park in Cheadle as a special guest for their celebrations. The event was one of over 600 being held across the country to celebrate the centenary. Mr Hunter cut the special centenary celebration cake and judged the competition for the best hat.
Speaking after the event Mr Hunter, a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Scouting said, "I was proud to be invited to celebrate the centenary of Girl Guiding with our local troop at Cheadle Abney. It was great to see so many young people out celebrating Girl Guiding. Guiding is a perfect way to make new friends and brings young people from across the community together and it was great to see such a big crowd having fun!"
One hundred years ago a group of girls approached Robert Baden-Powell at the 1909 Boy Scouts Rally in Crystal Palace Park asking for 'something for the girls'. Guiding now has 500,000 members in the UK and 10 million members across the globe. Established in a time when young women weren't allowed to run in public, Girl Guiding played an important part in narrowing the old gender divisions. This continues to be the case, with Girl Guides campaigning to see inequalities banished including pay differences and women to be able to compete in an equal number of events at the Olympic games.
Mr Hunter continued, "This centenary is a chance to celebrate Girl Guiding and the role it plays in many young women's lives. Guiding, like Scouting, helps young people develop many important life skills like team-work, perseverance and problem solving. Guiding provides a massive number of activities and experiences which offer the opportunity for young women to be independent and help others.
"Guides, Brownies and Rainbows continue to be a very popular among girls of all ages and play an important part in many young women's life and I'm sure this will still be the case in another one hundred years."
