Local MP commits to cut 10% by 2010

Mark's supporting the 10:10 campaign
Following the launch this week of the national 10:10 campaign, committed to cutting carbon emissions by 10% by 2010, local Cheadle MP Mark Hunter has signed up to support the campaign.
The 10:10 campaign is organised by the team behind the climate change film "The Age of Stupid" and is being supported by many other organisations including ActionAid, Comic Relief, the Carbon Trust, The Guardian, The Energy Saving Trust and many more. 10:10 is hoping to unite all sections of UK society including individuals, schools, businesses and other organisations to cut the UK's emissions by 10% by 2010.
Mr Hunter joined Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg and other politicians in signing up to the pledge to reduce their own carbon impact. Mr Hunter is pledging to reduce his energy bills and car journeys over the next 18 months in order to meet the target.
Commenting about the campaign Mr Hunter said, "I was very happy to sign up to 10:10 and will be making the difference in my own home from today. The campaign calls for drastic but necessary action to combat climate change. If everyone signed up to this pledge - families, hospitals, schools, businesses and other organisations - it would make a massive dent in the UK's carbon footprint.
"The 10% target by 2010 is what scientists say we must achieve to play our part in combating climate change, and there are real fears that the carbon reduction targets for 2050 might be too late. The UK should be working towards a zero carbon society now and this campaign will lead the way for other developed countries to follow suit.
"I would really encourage local residents to sign the pledge too, to show the Government that we are really serious about cutting carbon emissions - only as a mass movement can this campaign make a real difference to climate change. A 10% reduction by 2010 is only a beginning but it's an important first step towards Britain becoming carbon neutral."
