Cheadle MP and Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Limb Loss, Mark Hunter, this week visited "PACE Rehabilitation" a highly specialised health company based in Cheadle which provides rehabilitation services to people who have had amputations or lost limbs.

PACE not only provides prosthetic limbs, orthotics (devices which improve function and/or reduce pain and discomfort) and mobility devices, but also offers physiotherapy and occupational therapy as well as psychological and emotional help and legal services through their multi-disciplinary team of specialists. PACE provides services to a wide variety of people; from those who have lost limbs in accidents or due to disease to soldiers who have lost limbs while on duty.

While visiting the centre Mr Hunter met with senior staff and patients of PACE including consultant Dr Van Ross, registered prosthetist and orthotist Toby Carlsson and ex-soldier Bryn Clegg who was at PACE to have a prosthetic limb fitted. Mr Hunter was also introduced to the apprentice PACE are training.

Speaking after the visit Mr Hunter said, "PACE are one of the UK's leaders in this particular health field and I'm very proud that they are based in Cheadle. It was because of PACE that I got involved with the All Party Parliamentary Group on Limb Loss and I'm very keen to support this important area of health services.

"It's so important that people who go through horrific incidents where they loose their limbs have access to the most up-to-date technology and highest level of support, and PACE provides this. PACE takes a long-term and multi-disciplinary approach to rehabilitation so that patients get a very high level of care which is based on their own specific needs. By providing therapeutic care for their patients PACE helps them to cope with the mental and day-to-day affects of loosing a limb.

"There has, quite rightly, been much focus on soldiers who have lost their lives in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, but we must also not forget the many soldiers who have returned home with life-long conditions such as limb loss. Soldiers, such as Bryn, have put their own lives on the line to protect our security and they deserve the best treatment possible. PACE's close connections with serving and ex-military amputees has allowed them to provide the specialist care they need."
