Mark Hunter and Lady Winstanley at the garden party

Lady Joy Winstanley was a popular and welcome visitor to a Lib Dem garden party in Cheadle this week. Invited by local MP Mark Hunter, in the opening speech of the event held on Sunday in Cheadle Village, she urged residents to maintain the Liberal tradition that her late husband Dr Michael Winstanley fought so hard to maintain across the Stockport Borough.

Dr Michael Winstanley, served as Liberal MP for Cheadle between 1966 and 1970 before the constituency boundaries were changed and then served in '74 as MP for Hazel Grove. In 1976 he was ennobled Baron Winstanley under Harold Wilson's second term as Prime Minister.

Formerly a GP, Dr Winstanley was also a well known media personality as a TV and radio doctor during the 1960s. In the 1970s he went on to host Granada TV's This is your Right.

Speaking at the event local Lib Dem MP Mark Hunter said, "It's been an absolute honour to welcome Lady Winstanley today. It is vital that her husband's enthusiasm and passion for liberal democracy continues in Stockport, and through her tireless commitment she is still making that possible."

"Michael Winstanley was a great personality, but also a man who always put the needs of his constituents first and worked to serve them. It is great to have such an inspirational figure in Lady Winstanley to celebrate our recent success and give her backing to our local candidate Iain Roberts and the rest of the Lib Dem team."

If you are a resident of the Cheadle constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
