MP obtains promise - members will have chance to 'buy back' their Club

Mark is working to keep the Cheadle Hulme RBL Club open

Cheadle MP Mark Hunter, who has been at the forefront of the campaign to save Cheadle Hulme Royal British Legion (RBL) Club on Turves Road, has attained a firm promise from RBL National Chairman that Club members will be given the option of buying back the Club before other options are considered.

After concerned local members recruited their MP to the campaign to save the Club, Mark Hunter contacted the RBL National Chairman - Peter Cleminson - to press for Club members to have the opportunity of bidding to take over the Club themselves. Currently, the Club is owned and operated by NLC (New Legion Club) a subsidiary company of RBL.

Commenting after the pledge was given Mr Hunter said, "I'm delighted to have secured this promise - it's just the first step in our fight to keep the Club open. Local Club members (around 500 in number) were devastated when the announcement was made that NLC wanted to sell off the Club as part of a 'job lot' which included 8 other Clubs across the country.

"When the NLC took over the running of the club, club members were promised that they would have first refusal of the club if it was ever sold. That's why after reminding the RBL of their earlier commitment, it was important to get them to keep their word and guarantee that Club members would indeed have the chance to present their own business plan and bid to keep the Club open. Anything less would have been a betrayal of previous assurances. The Cheadle Hulme RBL Club is an integral part of the local community and should be not allowed to close."

Club members are currently putting together their proposals and have been given the full backing of the Cheadle MP in the fight to keep the premises open. Mr Hunter also put the club members in contact with Business Link North West (which provides free advice and support to businesses in the North West) who can advise them further with their business plan.
