Mark handing over the letters to 10, Downing Street

Mark Hunter MP this week presented letters written by the children at Cheadle Hulme High School to the Prime Minister asking him to improve education for children in developing countries.

The children from Cheadle Hulme High School gave their handmade cards to Mr Hunter to hand over to the Prime Minster as part of the Global Campaign for Education's 'Send my friend to school' campaign.

The Global Campaign for Education, which is supported by Nelson Mandela, is a movement involving thousands of charities, unions and campaigners across the globe that aims to end the global education crisis. Thousands of children across the UK have got involved in the campaign which seeks to urge the Government to keep the commitment made in the Millennium Development Goals, that all children should have access to an education by 2015. The campaign highlights the fact that with only 6 years to go, there are still 75 million children who aren't able to go to school.

Mr Hunter, who handed over the letters personally to Number 10 this week, commented, "This is an incredibly important campaign - without access to a good education these 75 million children have been sentenced to a lifetime of struggle and missed opportunities. No-one, no matter where they come from, should be left without the ability to read and write and to achieve this primary education for all is a necessity.

"It's brilliant that children from the local area - both Cheadle Hulme High School and Kingsway School - have got involved with this important campaign. Their letters were really inspiring and showed how much they appreciated their own education and wanted others to have the same opportunities. I was proud to hand them over to the Prime Minister on their behalf"

"It's imperative that the Government keeps their promise and does all it can to ensure that the Millennium Development Goals are met. With 774 million adults still unable to read and write we have a long way to go before universal education is achieved, and unless the Government acts quickly there will still be 40 million children out of school by the time we reach the deadline in 2015. As the local students have said loud and clear - we need action now!"
