Mark Hunter, Liberal Democrat MP for Cheadle constituency today congratulated The Christie and its supporters on the excellent news that the cancer hospital would finally be returned the £6.5 million they stood to lose in the Icelandic banking collapse.

Mr Hunter raised the issue in the House of Commons several times - asking the Charities Minister, on the floor of the House of Commons, what actions the Government were taking to retrieve the money, calling for a debate on the matter and arranging a private meeting with the Minister to discuss why the money had not been returned. Mr Hunter also signed and helped to present the local Manchester Evening News petition 'Cash back for the Christie' to 10 Downing Street.

Today, the Strategic Health Authority for the region, NHS North West, has announced that it will be returning the Christie's money I full.

Speaking after the news Mr Hunter said: "This is great news for the Christie and everyone who has campaigned and worked so hard for this money to be returned. The fact that over 100,000 people signed the petition to have the money returned shows just passionate local people are about this fantastic local hospital and how much they value the life-saving services it provides.

"I've personally been very involved with pushing the Government for a full refund for our local cancer hospital and would not have stopped fighting until all the money was returned. The Christie's work caring for and treating cancer patients and their work researching cancer treatments is nationally and internationally renowned and I'm extremely pleased that the Government has finally seen the light and returned the money.

"I know that cancer patients and their families across the North West will be breathing a sigh of relief now that the money has been returned, as am I. We should not forget, however, that many other charities and individuals have lost out in the Icelandic banking collapse through no fault of their own and I will continue to campaign on behalf of them."
