Local MP calls for debate on preventing cruelty to children

Mark is supporting the NSPCC campaign to review the child protection system
Cheadle constituency MP, Mark Hunter, this week in the House of Commons called for a debate on how young people can be better protected from harm and abuse.
Mr Hunter asked the Leader of the House of Commons for a debate in Government time on the 'concerns' raised by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children in their recent high-profile campaign relating to protecting children and young people in the aftermath of the Baby P case.
The NSPCC campaign, in response to the death of Baby P and the recent review of the child protection system in England, was brought to Mr Hunter's attention by many constituents who wrote to him as part of the NSPCC's postcard campaign.
Mr Hunter said: "The shocking and tragic death of Baby P I know has upset and angered many people across the country, including many local families. The case has motivated many local people to campaign for better a child protection system and practice in the UK. "
"After the similar case of Victoria Climbie in 2000 you would hope that lessons had been learnt and that the UK child protection service had improved. Sadly the case of Baby P proves just how far our country has to go before children and young people are adequately protected.
"I was very disappointed that the Leader of the House of Commons would not agree to a debate in Government time on the wider issues relating to child protection. This is a very serious issue and the Government should be taking drastic and urgent action to make sure that nothing like this can ever happen again. You can be assured that I will continue to campaign to ensure that the Government takes our concerns and those of the NSPCC very seriously."
