Christmas Tree Lights Switch on by Mark Hunter MP and Stockport Olympians Hannah Whelhan & Mark Walker

It has been a busy week for Local MP Mark Hunter attending special Christmas events across the Cheadle constituency.

On Thursday (10th December) Mr Hunter was invited as a special guest of Beechwood Cancer Care to attend their annual Tree of Lights festival held this year at Bramhall Methodist Church. Mr Hunter gave one of the special Christmas readings and joined with the congregation including Queensgate Primary School in traditional Christmas carols.

Mark and his wife Lesley joined the local community in "Lighting up Bramhall" on Saturday (6th December). The event in Bramhall village was a full day of festivities to celebrate the beginning of Christmas and the campaign to encourage people to shop locally in Bramhall. The afternoon events began with Christmas Carols and Music by local school children, Father Christmas even dropped by. Mr Hunter then joined mystery guests Hannah Whelhan (the 16 year old Olympic Gymnast) and Matt Walker (five times medal winner in swimming at the Beijing 2008 Paralympics) to turn on the Bramhall Christmas tree lights. The event was supported by local businesses many of whom donated refreshments, decorations or other aspects of the celebrations, and was attended by a variety of community and religious groups as well as schools.

Mark and Lesley were also guests at the Heald Green Annual Brass Band Christmas Concert in Heald Green Village Hall on Outwood Road on Sunday 7th December. The event is organised annually by the "Friends of the Village Hall", and was supported by some 300 residents who came to hear the Poynton Brass Band concert. During the event Mr Hunter even helped with the prize raffle and led the vote of thanks!

Speaking after the events Mr Hunter said: "It's great this time of year to see the communities in our area coming together to celebrate the festive season.

"Lighting up Bramhall" was truly spectacular, with so many families and people out enjoying the celebrations. I was honoured to be invited to turn on the Christmas lights, especially with such distinguished and talented British athletes. It was wonderful to see the children enjoying themselves so much carol singing. I do want to say a big thank you to all those who put so much effort into organising what has become one of the highlights of the year in Bramhall.

"The Tree of Lights ceremony was also a real treat, and I was very pleased to be asked to do one of the readings during the service. It was uplifting, in a time when everyone is trying to tighten their belts, to see our community giving so generously to Beechwood Cancer Care Centre, our local cancer charity who do such a fantastic job supporting cancer patients and their families.

"I always enjoy the Brass Band concert in the Heald Green village hall, and was very pleased to be able to attend again this year with Lesley. It's always great fun helping with the raffle and wonderful to see so many local people enjoying themselves at this traditional Christmas concert."
