Queen's Speech "won't help families in our area" says local MP

Mark is calling for the Government to take real action to help families through the recession

Mark Hunter MP claims that the Government's plans for new laws, announced yesterday in the Queen's speech will do very little to help hard-pressed families in the Cheadle constituency area who are struggling to cope with the recession.

The Queen's speech is a chance for the Government to announce what Bills they are going to introduce in the coming year, in particular this year was an opportunity to show the public what Government will do to help people through the recession.

Commenting on the Queen's Speech Mr Hunter said: ""The measures proposed are not enough to help people struggling with the real problems we are now facing. In my view, we need legislation to change the way energy tariffs work to make sure people get the cheapest prices for essential fuel and power and changes to taxes to put money back in people's pockets.

"With the massive discounts on offer in the shops at the moment, the short term trimming of VAT will make little difference and what we need now is income tax cuts targeted at low earners and paid for through closing tax loopholes for the very rich. Local residents who are worried by the economic situation will find little comfort in this programme.

"We need action to force the banks to lend money on fair terms to small businesses and families - and make it quite clear that if the banks cannot be made to act, the government will lend directly itself. The Government wasted the opportunity to help people in last week's Pre-Budget Report and now with the Queen's Speech they are wasting it again."

If you are a resident of the Cheadle constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
