Mark is fighting against the congestion charge

Mark Hunter MP for the Cheadle constituency is today encouraging local residents to have their say about the congestion charge proposals by voting in the current referendum.

Figures have been released by the returning officer for the Greater Manchester Transport Referendum that only 26.6% of the electorate in Stockport (57,636) have voted on these proposals.

The Greater Manchester Transport Referendum will allow the citizens of all of Greater Manchester to vote on the TIF proposals which will introduce a £5 charge for every car that travels into or out of the centre of Manchester at peak times.

Voters have until 10pm on 11 December to return their completed ballot papers. The results will be announced on 12 December.

Commenting on the news Mr Hunter said: "Although I've been campaigning strongly for a 'No' vote, this referendum is very important to everyone regardless of their views, as it allows local residents a real say over whether this congestion charge is introduced. It really will be the case that every vote will count and I am therefore encouraging everyone to put their ballot in the post whatever their view about the scheme.

"It's in the best interest of some of the other areas of Greater Manchester to vote for this scheme because they will get considerable investment in their public transport infrastructure, we won't get this investment and therefore we need to make sure that everyone from Stockport votes so that our area gets a fair say.

"Everyone should have received their ballot papers and information packs by now, but if you haven't or if you have any questions please call the Referendum Helpline on 0800 783 9828 between 9-5pm Monday-Friday. Please find the time to vote in this election and make your voice heard on the proposals. If you don't, you may find yourself forking out £25 a week extra just to travel to work."

If you are a resident of the Cheadle constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
