Mark getting vaccinated for flu this winter

This week in Parliament Mark Hunter MP for Cheadle was vaccinated for flu to raise awareness of the need for vulnerable individuals in his constituency to be protected from flu this winter.

MPs and Peers from all parties were today offered flu vaccinations, in line with Government recommendations, in a bid to encourage their constituents to be vaccinated against flu for this 2008/09 season.

The NHS offers free flu vaccinations for at risk groups, including; those aged 65 or over; people with chronic respiratory disease (including asthma), heart, renal or liver disease; diabetes; low immune systems; as well as people living in long-stay facilities such as nursing and residential homes, and carers of elderly or disabled people .

Complications from flu can be severe, with as many as 3,000 - 4,000 deaths in the UK each year attributable to flu . Yet, despite offering free vaccinations for these individuals last year only 76 % of people over 65 years and 42.6 % in at risk groups were vaccinated against flu in the Stockport area.

Speaking after being vaccinated, Mr Hunter said, "As an asthmatic myself, I understand that while flu is a pretty nasty infection to get, it can be a very serious illness for people over the age of 65 or in at-risk groups. These individuals should make it a priority to visit their GP surgeries as soon as possible for a free flu vaccination. Flu vaccination plays an important role in protecting those people who are more susceptible to serious complications from the condition."

If you are a resident of the Cheadle constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
