Cheadle Constituency MP Mark Hunter was recently the guest speaker at the Annual General Meeting of the Stockport Branch of Home Start - a charity dedicated to helping families with young children.

Home start provide help, friendship, advice and support to any family with a child under 5 years of age, and are made up mainly of experienced volunteers from the local area. By offering help with the children and advice for new parents, Home Start volunteers help to increase the confidence and independence of new families.

Speaking at the meeting in Stockport, Cheadle MP Mark Hunter said, "Many parents face difficulties when starting a family, for a whole variety of reasons. Some may be finding it difficult to cope with the birth of twins or triplets, others may simply be feeling overwhelmed by the new responsibility that comes with raising a child - daunting for many, if not all, new parents. I think we can all agree with Home Start's mission statement - 'Children need a happy and secure childhood and that parents play a key role in giving their children a good start in life and helping them to achieve their potential'"

"I am extremely proud to acknowledge and pay tribute to the passion, leadership and dedication of Home Start volunteers in providing not only practical, but emotional support to families who are struggling. In 2006 and 2007 Home Start UK supported almost 35,000 families and over 71,000 children. This is a remarkable feat, and Home Start volunteers across the whole country deserve the heartfelt thanks of all of our communities."
