Mark encouraging residents to use TrustMark when choosing a tradesman or builder

Cheadle MP Mark Hunter is supporting a campaign highlighting concerns about the issue of Cowboy Builders and Rogue Traders, and is backing the TrustMark initiative which seeks to help and advise residents.

Cowboy Builders and Rogue Traders cost families £1.5 billion annually across the country, ruin the homes and lives of thousands of people every year and give professional builders a bad reputation.

TrustMark is a national scheme that helps families to find reliable and trustworthy tradesmen to carry out repairs or improvements to their homes. All firms on the scheme have their technical skills, quality of work, trading practices and customer satisfaction independently and regularly checked. They also are required to sign up to a code of practice for good insurance, health and safety, and customer care including a user-friendly complaints procedure. TrustMark covers a variety of tradesmen from builders and plumbers to landscape gardeners.

Speaking at an event in Parliament to promote the campaign Mr Hunter said, "Residents need to be aware of the real danger of employing Cowboy Builders and Rogue Tradesmen, not least because they rarely guarantee the quality of their work. Not surprisingly, the Trading Standards Officers receive more and more complaints from home owners across the country about building work.

TrustMark is an excellent way to protect householders and is an easy way for individuals to employ good quality tradesmen for work on their home. Every householders in the UK needs to demand that the tradesmen they employ have the TrustMark accreditation and the standards this guarantees. Until homeowners do this Cowboy Builders and Rogue Traders will continue to be able to prey on unsuspecting families."
