Cheadle MP Mark Hunter sees union learning take off at Manchester Airport

Cheadle MP Mark Hunter this week visited Manchester Airport to see how his constituents and others are improving their skills. Unite the union, together with other site unions and in partnership with employers at Manchester Airport, have set up a learning centre where staff can improve their skills and job opportunities.
Mr Hunter heard from staff about their learning experiences and answered their questions as well as meeting union learning reps. The learning partnership at the region's largest airport involves employers on site such as Select Service Partners, Alpha Caterers and LSG Skychef. They are working with trade unions and local colleges and are supported by the Union Learning Fund, which is run by unionlearn (the TUC's learning and skills organisation) and funds many similar projects across the North West.
Unionlearn North West Regional Manager Dave Eva, representatives from Bury College and City College Manchester also attended the event.
Mark Hunter, MP for Cheadle said: "Everyone involved in this project should be proud of what they have started here. It is a great example of how working in partnership can lead to staff improving not only their working lives, but their own lives as well. "
Unite Convenor Lesley Addie said: "Unite is delighted to work with the employers at Manchester Airport to improve learning and skills for staff here. Union Learning Funding has enabled us to start things off and do what we would not otherwise have been able to do. Unite is looking forward to working with the Airport to develop staff and improve services to the public."
Dave Eva, unionlearn Regional Manager, said: "This learning centre is really taking off in a big way and staff are able to take advantage of the centre to improve their skills, which impacts on their lives at work and outside of work. As one of the largest employers in the region, Manchester Airport is setting a great example to other employers, of how to work with their trade unions and improve skills
