Local MP speaks out for climate change action

Mark speaks up for climate change at community event
This weekend Cheadle Hulme Methodist Church hosted a major community event on climate change, which included an exhibition and the participation of several local schools. Schools involved included Greenbank, Lane End, Ramillies Hall, and Queen's Road Primaries as well as Hulme Hall School and Cheadle Hulme High School.
Local MP for the Cheadle Constituency Mark Hunter was the special guest invited by the church to head the panel of speakers which also included Local Councillor Stuart Bodsworth, Dr Jim Watson of the University of Sussex and Phil Turner designer of the book 'Your Planet Needs You'.
During his speech Mr Hunter discussed the effect of climate change on the world as well as our local community, the importance of engaging young people with climate change, and the ways in which we can tackle climate change internationally, nationally, in our local communities and as individuals. He also spoke about the Climate Change Bill currently progressing through Parliament and the Liberal Democrat environmental policies such as the green tax switch.
Mr Hunter, speaking after the rally said, "I was delighted to be asked to be the guest speaker at this important and inspiring event. I would like to thank the Cheadle Hulme Methodist Church for organising it and inviting me to speak. Particularly pleasing was the involvement of several local schools. Helping to raise awareness of the problem of climate change among young people is vital to ensuring a sustainable future for our planet.
"I have been supporting moves in Parliament to make the Climate Change Bill more effective. At the moment the Bill is too weak - I will be working for annual targets for emissions and adequate reporting back mechanisms to be included in the bill.
The Government has a responsibility to put climate change at the top of the agenda in Westminster and to ensure that people are supported and encouraged to 'go green'. We need more green taxes not less, and we need to tax bad things like pollution more and good things like work less. That why I'm proud that my party were the first to advocate a 'green tax switch.
"The turn out at this event was really encouraging and demonstrated the drive our community has to do its bit to combat climate change. We can do a lot more locally to be environmentally friendly - we can all recycle more and be more energy efficient. I was inspired by the enthusiasm of all the people there present and hope that we can all do our bit to spread the message that climate change matters."
