Liberal Democrat leadership contender and local MP visit police chief

Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary and candidate for the Liberal Democrat leadership, Nick Clegg (MP for Sheffield Hallam), visited Neil Wain Stockport's Chief Police Officer with local Cheadle MP, Mark Hunter, to discuss local policing issues this week.
Mr Clegg had been invited to Stockport by the Cheadle MP, in order to discuss what he believes to be a crisis in police funding. The two MPs met with Neil Wain for talks on problems associated with anti-social behaviour and vandalism across the Cheadle Constituency and the wider area. During the meeting the MPs also expressed concern about the lack of resources available to support the local community policing strategy.
Speaking just after the meeting Mark Hunter said "I have nothing but praise for our local police men and women and the excellent work that they do on an extremely tight budget.
The problem is that quite frankly there just aren't enough police officers on our local streets. While the Labour run Greater Manchester Police Authority is facing further cuts over the next three years, millions of pounds each year is spent subsidising the Metropolitan Police in London. Planned funding cuts could mean a reduction in up to 600 police officers from our streets, while every Council ward in London has a dedicated team of six officers. Quite frankly if it's good enough for London its good enough for the rest of us too!"
Mr Clegg has been at the forefront of the Lib Dem's national "We can cut crime!" campaign, which proposes saving the billions wasted on the ID card scheme and putting the money instead into getting more police back onto our streets.
Nick Clegg commented "I was delighted to be invited up to Stockport by Mark. Having worked closely with Mark on the Home Affairs portfolio I know that he is as committed as I am to a proper community police strategy. He and I will continue to fight for fairer funding for the local police."
