Mark Hunter, MP for the Cheadle constituent, is supporting the Daily Mirror's campaign to "honour the brave".

The campaign is calling on the Government to create a special medal to honour those service men and women who had died or been wounded in action in Iraq and Afghanistan. The medal would not be for accidental injury or for wounds that only required local first aid, but only for those wounded or killed in battle as a direct result of enemy action.

The campaign was started by Colonel Richard Kemp, previously head of UK forces in Afghanistan, and is supported by many of the relatives of those soldiers killed or wounded, as well as a host of former military and political leaders.

In support of this campaign Mr Hunter has signed EDM 95 in the House of Commons which recognises the bravery, dedication and sacrifice of members of the armed forces and calls for this campaign to be implemented.

Speaking after the launch of the campaign in Parliament Mr Hunter said: "I support this campaign fully, the service men and women who risk their lives and are injured or killed all deserve recognition for the sacrifices they have made for their country. The families of those killed in enemy action and those with sometimes life-changing injuries suffer great losses and acknowledging their service is the least that the Government can do.

"During the World War two the next of kin of those killed received bronze plaques in recognition of their sacrifice, and in World War they received a Commemorative Scroll. Why are the sacrifices made today worth less than those of fifty years ago?

The Military Covenant states that British soldiers in return for their service should be rewarded by terms of service that match the personal sacrifices they make. The medal would help support this aspect of the military covenant and show that the troops' personal sacrifices are valued by those that they protect. The Government should fulfil the promise ingrained in the Military Covenant and rewards these troops for their courageous sacrifice."
