Parliamentary Press writing competition now open!

2007 winners of the competition
Local MP, Mark Hunter is backing local schools and students by encouraging them to get involved and send in their work for this year's Parliamentary Press Gallery essay writing competition.
The competition is aimed at pupils in years 10 to 13 and is designed to complement citizenship lessons in schools. It aims to promote awareness and discussion of the values of parliamentary democracy and the political process, and in addition, an understanding of the role of parliamentary journalism.
The competition winners spend a day in Parliament (in late February/early March), and have in the past been able to meet the Speaker, many MPs (including Mr Hunter), the Prime Minister, and political journalists from a variety of national and regional newspapers, television and radio.
This year's theme is global poverty, and the closing entry for essays is 12th November 2007. The competition is divided into two year groups, i.e. Group 1 will cover Years 10 and 11; Group 2 will cover Years 12 and 13. (S5-6)There will be one winner from each age group in each region.
Speaking about the competition Mark Hunter said; "This competition is an excellent opportunity from pupils from local schools in our area to broaden their horizons and gives the regional winner the opportunity to see politics and politicians close up.
It allows students to explore this year's theme of global poverty; a very important topic which I know really engages young people. The competition encourages pupils to develop their writing skills and gives them experience of the world of journalism, as well the opportunity to meet and talk to journalists. This competition is perfect for both young people with an interest in politics or journalism and those who just want to express their views about global poverty.
It is very important for young people to get involved and feel engaged in politics, and this competition is a perfect opportunity for those in years 10 to 13 to expand their citizenship courses and put them to practise in a journalistic setting.
Having had a winner from the Cheadle constituency last year, I'd be delighted to introduce another to local winner to the House of Commons this year."
