Local Talking Newspaper celebrates 30th Anniversary

August 2, 2007 12:00 PM

This week Cheadle MP, Mark Hunter joined staff and volunteers of the Stockport Talking Newspaper in celebrating their 30th Anniversary. The event, held at their Shaw Heath headquarters included an opportunity to look around the facilities and participate in a recording of this weeks issue. Also at the open evening were the Mayor of Stockport, Councillor June Somekh, and representatives of local charities who support the Stockport Talking Newspaper financially.

The Stockport Talking Newspaper is an organisation which records items from the latest issue of the Stockport Express onto tapes and issues 200 copies a week to visually impaired people in the area. The tapes include an hour's worth of the borough's news and events, including items of particular interest to visually impaired people. The group is funded by generous donations from local voluntary organisations, and plans to introduce the option of CD to boost their circulation.

Speaking after the event Mr Hunter said: "The Stockport Talking Newspaper is an important and very impressive service which provides visually impaired people with information about local news and events.

I was incredibly pleased to be able to support them in this, their 30th Anniversary year. 30 years really is a great achievement and I would like to thank the volunteers for all the time and effort they give to making this service work as well as it has for so long.

I wish all the very best for the Stockport Talking Newspaper, especially in their new endeavour to expand their organisation by including CDs, as well as materials in large print and Braille. I know that they need additional funds for this and I would like to encourage local businesses and charities to consider giving a donation, and help to secure the future of the Talking Newspaper."
