Local MP gets pledge from Minister to visit site of relief road

The relief road is needed now to deal with traffic in the area.
Cheadle MP, Mark Hunter has attended with other local MPs an urgent meeting with the Roads Minister Rosie Winterton. Mr Hunter requested the meeting following the announcement that the Department of Transport wanted to phase the construction of the A555 relief road. The meeting, which took place on Thursday (26th July) included Hazel Grove MP Andrew Stunell, Macclesfield MP Sir Nicholas Winterton, Stockport MP Anne Coffey and MP Andrew Gwynne the MP for Denton and Reddish.
During the meeting the Minister reiterated the Government's support for the scheme in principle, but reiterated that the only way forward from this point would be through a phased approach. The Minister also committed the Department of Transports' civil servants to working with the Local Authorities for Stockport, Macclesfield and Manchester to find a solution.
At the meeting Mr Hunter invited the Minister to visit the area in order to see for herself what a difference the scheme would make to residents and the local community. The Minister accepted the invitation and will hopefully be visiting in the near future.
Speaking after the meeting Mr Hunter said: "I am pleased that the Government has reiterated its support in principle for this scheme which is so important to the safety and wellbeing of residents and the future of our local community. That the civil servants from the Department of Transport will continue to work with the local authorities is also a positive sign.
I am however, concerned about how useful the 'phased' approach will be. Until the whole road is completed traffic will not be able to flow through the area effectively. I was glad to be able to invite the Minister to the area so that she could see for herself how much this road is needed and what a difference it will make to local residents who have already had to wait far too long to see this scheme completed. I just hope that after her visit she is convinced enough to make its completion a top priority for her department.
I will of course, continue to work alongside MPs from neighbouring areas to urge the Government on this issue and ensure the completion of this vital local scheme. Local people have had to wait long enough for this road, what we need now is action not promises."
