Mark backs Christian Aid's Cut the Carbon! campaign
Cheadle MP, Mark Hunter last week spoke out in the House of Commons about the problem of CO2 emissions affecting the developing world. During Business questions (12th July) Mr Hunter asked the Leader of the House, the Right Honourable Harriet Harman MP to find time for a debate on the effect of climate change on the developing world.
This question came in the wake of the current Christian Aid campaign to encourage the Government to tackle climate change more effectively. The campaign emphasises that the international activities of UK companies account for at least 12-15% of global CO2 emissions. It calls on the Government to bring Britain's corporate sector to account by legislating that companies publish a full account of their global carbon footprint in their annual reports and encouraging companies to commit to a 5% cut per year. The campaign also calls for the Government to cut the UK's total carbon emissions by 5% each year, a total of at least 80% by 2050.
Speaking after Business Questions Mr Hunter said: "I am delighted to support this important campaign from Christian Aid. The UK needs to live up to its responsibilities in this area, and do everything we can to tackle climate change. Corporate social responsibility figures increasingly prominently on the agenda for big business, and the Government needs to do more to encourage companies to act responsibly when it comes to carbon emissions."
"The greatest injustice of climate change is that developing countries are paying the highest price for problems they did not create, with floods, hurricanes, temperature change, and other extreme weather conditions. These changes in the environment cause drought, crop failure, cattle deaths, hunger, and intensified fighting over dwindling water supplies. Millions of people are already at risk because of these changes, and the UK should be working to ensure that they are not further affected by our actions."
