Local MP salutes National Trust Anniversary

Mark congratulates the Trust on its centenary of work conserving our environment and national heritage

The centenary of the National Trust was brought to the attention of Parliament today when Cheadle constituency MP, Mark Hunter, tabled an Early Day motion celebrating the Trust's first one hundred years.

The motion, backed by MPs from the Labour, Liberal Democrat and Conservative parties, pays tribute to the National Trusts founding patrons and the 43,000 volunteers who today provide the active help and support on which the Trust depends.

Mark Hunter, a long-standing member of the National Trust himself, said after tabling the motion, "The National Trust is a hugely valuable organisation which works hard to preserve land, gardens and properties of all shapes and sizes across the country in perpetuity, for the nation to enjoy. The excellent work the Trust does is not just limited to preservation, it also works to improve the environment and invests over £160 million a year in environmental infrastructure. August 2007 marks the centenary of the passing of the National Trust Act, and it seems fitting that Parliament marks this very significant anniversary.

Like 50 million others, my family and I have enjoyed many interesting and enjoyable visits to National Trust properties and protected land, and I wanted to pay tribute not just to the founders for their vision and determination, but also to all the current volunteers who perform such a vital role allowing the Trust to continue its valuable work."

Below is the text of the Early Day Motion 1621: 'Centenary of the National Trust Act' tabled by Mr Hunter MP:

'That this House notes that August 2007 will mark the centenary of the National Trust Act which provided the legal framework for the National Trust to be established and gave it powers to make by-laws and declare its land and properties inalienable; salutes the Trust's three founders, Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley, Octavia Hill and Sir Robert Hunter, for their vision and determination in establishing an organisation that now protects over 617,500 acres of British countryside and 700 miles of coastline; recognises the enormous contribution made by the National Trust and its 43,000 volunteers without which the heritage and culture of the nation would not have benefited from the outstanding beauty of the 316 houses, castles, churches and pubs in the Trust's care; congratulates the Trust on achieving its centenary; and wishes it well for the next 100 years.'
