Local MP Mark Hunter encourages residents to register for local elections - only 3 weeks to go!

March 29, 2007 1:30 PM

Local MP Mark Hunter gave his support to the Electoral Commission's Registration Week, which launched last week (27th March) alongside an advertising campaign, to remind people to ensure they are registered (see Photograph attached).

Cheadle constituency residents have only three weeks left to make sure that they are on the electoral register, if they want to vote in the local elections on 3rd May. Unless they are registered by 18th April they will be unable to vote for their local council representatives.

To register all people need to do is complete a simple form and return it to their Stockport Metropolitan Council by 18th April, if they have not already completed and returned a form within the last six months. People who have moved house also need to do this as a matter of urgency. Forms are downloadable from www.aboutmyvote.co.uk or by contacting the Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council's electoral registration office directly on (0845 833 0041).

Speaking after the event, Mr Hunter said, "Local elections take place on 3rd May and voters need to make sure they don't loose their right to vote by missing the registration deadline. Losing your vote means losing your voice and missing out on the change to have your say on local issues from street lighting and sports facilities to local parks and transport".

If you are a resident of the Cheadle constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
