Cheadle MP makes festive environmental pledge

Cheadle MP Mark Hunter has pledged to remember the environment this festive season.
During the season to be jolly, it¡¦s not just our waistlines that could be increasing ¡V in the UK alone, it will mean an extra three million tonnes of waste from food and drink packaging, Christmas trees, cards, wrapping paper and even a few unwanted presents.
Now Mark has taken up an Environment Agency challenge and promised to do his part to reduce the amount of rubbish he produces over Christmas and the new year.
Mark said: "i'm astounded by the amount of paper, card and other materials we simply throw away over Christmas."
"As part of my pledge towards the environment I have decided that I will reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible and I would urge local people to do their bit too so, together, we can make it a greener Christmas."
Here are some shocking statistics:
" Of the three million extra tonnes of rubbish we produce over Christmas, only 12 per cent of it will be recycled
" As much as 83 square kilometres of wrapping paper will end up in our bins over Christmas ¡V enough to cover an area larger than Guernsey
" Out of the 7.5 million trees bought at Christmas, only 1.2 million are recycled. Discarded trees create enough waste to fill the Albert Hall three times
" The equivalent of 200,000 trees are used to produce the 1.7 billion Christmas cards bought each year in Britain.
Environment Agency area manager Annette Pinner said: "There are all sorts of ways to make sure that your celebrations have minimum impact on the environment, and it doesn¡¦t have to be hard work".
"Waste disposal is a major issue facing the country and space for landfill sites is becoming an ever increasing problem. With a bit of planning this Christmas you can help to ensure that this holiday season is just as enjoyable for generations to come."
